A Weekend In Houston, Texas : Travel Guide

Updated: Oct 15, 2020

HOWDY Y’ALL! Okay, sorry I felt like I had to start my intro with a little southern slang because this guide is dedicated to a weekend in Houston, Texas! I have explored many different cities in Texas, but this was my first time visiting Houston. This city is full of diversity, science & space museums, delicious food, shopping, and art! I have put together all of my Houston favorites in this guide!

Where to Stay Houston, Texas | Hotel ZaZa

Houston is the fourth most populated city in the United States, so picking where to stay depends entirely on what you are looking to do!

Hotel ZaZa

Hotel ZaZa is located in Houston's "midtown" / "museum district", which is known for its vintage, artsy type boutiques, art + science museums, and nightlife! I love this Instagram worthy boutique style hotel because it features luxurious accommodations, an amazing on-site restaurant, an event space, and the “Have No Mercy” deep-tissue massage at the Zaspa is to die for. Also, Hotel ZaZa is only a 4 minute walk from the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and located around the corner from the Houston Museum of Fine Art.

WHERE TO EAT IN HOUSTON, TEXAS

I found some of the BEST food in Houston!

Velvet tacos is liberating tacos to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL! The funky & fast-casual setting, is founded on the idea that "tacos don't have to be associated with Tex-Mex cuisine, and can be made with the same care and quality ingredients as fine dining." Velvet Taco's menu offers 20+ unique taco creations, and uses made from scratch FRESH quality ingredients. My personal favorite was the Buffalo Chicken taco + their margarita!

Craving Japanese cuisine? This is your place! Kata Robata was recommended to me by many locals, and for a good reason! This restaurant features arguably the freshest & highest quality fish in Houston, plus has the finest selection of sake and Japanese whisky in Texas!

For the ultimate experience, make a reservation for an "omakase".

Moxie's caught my attention through Instagram by being a trendy and social environment bar and restaurant. I came here for brunch and while I was enjoying the massive outdoor patio, I was amazed by the large drink menu, happy hour, and their wide variety of fantastic food options! Be sure to try their fresh guac, and take a picture in front of their Instagram famous, "I will if you will" sign!

The absolute cutest and most perfect place for a girls night or private party! Reserve a DIY table, order your craft to your table (water colors, tassel keychains / earrings, etc.), get a private art lesson, and choose from a wide assortment of boba teas, coffees and other fun treats.

One of Texas's favorite taco joints! Their slogan pretty much sums it up with "damn good tacos". I recommend the "lil' nookies" fried chocolate chip cookie dough bites with the "Trailer Park"tacos, but get it "extra trashy", which is Torchy's way of saying, add queso!

Best. Chocolate. Chip. Cookies. Ever. Just walk up to the open window, and get sucked into the shelves of freshly baked goodies.

"It's not yesterday anymore"

Think Palm Springs oasis in the middle of Montrose! The 21+ bar has the most vibrant patio serving signature cocktails, and delicious food! The fun never stops here!

Things To Do | Houston Texas

There is plenty to see and do in Houston, so I provided my top 7 recommendations including 2 day trips if your schedule permits it!

The best science center I have ever been to, which makes it a must do in Houston! Here you can explore tropical rainforests, dinosaurs, a butterfly exhibit, world's galaxies away, and earth's future to name a few of my favorites. To explore all their exhibits view their website.

  • Pricing: Adults (ages 12 and up) $25, child (3-11) $16, children under 2 FREE, college students with ID $16, seniors (62+) $16, military with ID $10)

"Houston we've had a problem" -crew of the Apollo 13 moon flight

The science and space lover in me needed to experience Houston's NASA Space Center. The center features more than 400 space artifacts as well as numerous exhibits, attractions, and theaters related to the exciting future and remarkable past of America’s human space-flight program.

  • Pricing: Children (3 and younger) free, Kids (4-11) $24.95, Adults (12+) @29.95, Seniors (65+) $27.95

Located in the Houston Museum District, the Houston Museum of Fine Art, is one of the largest museums in the United States. You can search the museums impressive collections and exhibitions on their website. I'm most excited to see their upcoming exhibition titled, "Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power".

  • Pricing: Adults (19+) $19, seniors with ID(65+) $16, kids under 12 get in for free, college students with ID & youth (13-18) $12, military with ID get in for free.

Located in the heart of Uptown Houston, the Galleria is Houston's largest shopping center with every store and designer brand you could possibly think of! If you get bored of shopping you can take advantage of the ice skating rink, or eat at one of the many restaurants located within the shopping mall!

A living museum of art! The Color Factory is a collaborative interactive exhibit that guides visitors through 12 installations. Highlights include floating orbs, an interactive light and sound installation, a palette of colorful treats featuring anti-gravity ice cream, a giant Night Bright, and — of course — Color Factory's signature ball room.

  • Pricing: Adults $35, kids (12-18) $28, children under 2 are free

6. Day Trip to Sunny Beach in Galveston, Texas!

Visiting in the hot summer months? Galveston is around an hour drive from most parts of Houston. My favorite (dog friendly) beach to hang out at is called "Sunny Beach". Make sure to eat a beachfront happy hour at the The Spot before heading back to Houston!

  • If you want to make a beach weekend out of Galveston, Schlitterbahn Waterpark is located in Galveston and would provide fun thrills for all ages!

7. Day trip to Magnolia market at the Silos

I am a HUGE fan of Chip and Joanna Gaines HGTV show, Fixer Upper. I aspire to have Joanna's farmhouse modern style and entrepreneurial spirit, so of course I had to make the 3 hour drive to Waco, Texas to check off the Magnolia Market from my bucket-list! This is a family friendly (including dogs) area with plenty of shopping and food trucks for eating! Make sure you stop by the Silos Bakery for yummy cupcakes!
